India is actively pursuing self-reliance in its small arms and ammunition manufacturing sector to enhance national security and reduce dependence on imports. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has achieved a significant milestone by indigenising 154 out of 175 ammunition variants required by the Indian Army, representing an impressive 88% indigenisation rate. This accomplishment is part of a strategic 10-year plan aimed at achieving complete self-sufficiency in firepower, which is crucial for enduring prolonged warfare scenarios.
In addition to ammunition, India is focusing on the domestic production of small arms. The current inventory of small arms is estimated at approximately 5-6 million, with a significant portion being vintage designs. There is a pressing need to upgrade and standardize these weapons to meet modern defense requirements. The Indian Armed Forces, along with paramilitary and police forces, are seeking advanced small arms to enhance operational effectiveness.
Private sector involvement is also gaining momentum in the defense manufacturing landscape. Companies like Adani Defence & Aerospace are making substantial investments in the sector. In February 2024, Adani inaugurated two ammunition and missile manufacturing facilities in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, marking the first phase of the state’s defense corridor. These facilities are designed to produce various calibers of ammunition and missiles for the Indian armed forces and police, aiming to cover 25% of India’s annual requirement.
The government’s commitment to self-reliance is further demonstrated by the phased import bans on various defense items, including small arms and ammunition. These measures are intended to encourage domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the importance of these steps in boosting India’s defense manufacturing capabilities.
Through these concerted efforts, India aims to establish a robust and self-sustaining small arms and ammunition manufacturing sector, thereby enhancing national security and contributing to the country’s defense self-reliance.
