India’s defense exports reached an all-time high of ₹21,083 crore in 2024, reflecting a remarkable 32.5% growth compared to the previous year. This surge underscores the country’s increasing footprint in the global defense market, driven by indigenously developed platforms and a strong push under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative.
Key contributors to the export growth include advanced systems such as BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA), and artillery systems, along with components for global OEMs like Boeing and Airbus. Additionally, exports of drones, radar systems, and electronic warfare equipment have gained traction, catering to markets in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
The government’s proactive policies, including the introduction of export promotion schemes, simplification of defense licensing, and active engagement with foreign governments, have significantly bolstered defense exports. The involvement of private sector firms and MSMEs, alongside collaborations with DRDO, has further enhanced India’s ability to deliver high-quality, cost-effective defense products.
This export growth aligns with India’s goal of achieving $5 billion in annual defense exports by 2025, as outlined in the Defense Production and Export Promotion Policy (DPEPP). The achievement not only highlights India’s emergence as a global defense manufacturing hub but also strengthens its geopolitical influence by fostering security partnerships with allied nations.
