India and France have finalized defense deals worth approximately $10 billion, marking a significant milestone in their strategic partnership. The agreements include the procurement of 26 Rafale-M jets, specifically designed for carrier operations, and the collaborative construction of three additional Scorpene-class submarines under India’s Project-75. These acquisitions aim to bolster India’s maritime and aerial combat capabilities amidst growing regional security challenges.
The Rafale-M jets will enhance the Indian Navy’s air power, operating from the country’s aircraft carriers, including INS Vikrant. These jets feature advanced avionics, superior weapon systems, and cutting-edge stealth technology, making them a formidable addition to India’s fleet.
The Scorpene submarines, to be built in partnership with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, will include advanced upgrades such as air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems for extended underwater endurance. This deal underscores India’s push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, while leveraging French expertise in submarine technology.
