India’s C-295 to Gain Advanced Weapons for Maritime Surveillance

India’s newly inducted C-295 transport aircraft, set to bolster the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) fleet, is now planned to be equipped with advanced weapon systems and sensors to enhance its maritime surveillance and defense capabilities. Originally designed as a tactical transport aircraft, the C-295 is undergoing upgrades to transform it into a versatile platform capable of monitoring and protecting India’s vast maritime boundaries.

Key modifications include the integration of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems, maritime radar, and advanced electro-optical sensors for detecting and tracking surface and underwater threats. The aircraft will also be armed with lightweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and countermeasure systems, enabling it to perform offensive and defensive operations.

This enhanced configuration is part of India’s effort to modernize its surveillance infrastructure amid rising regional tensions and growing security concerns in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). By equipping the C-295 with these advanced systems, India aims to strengthen its maritime domain awareness and improve its ability to counter emerging threats, such as piracy, smuggling, and naval intrusions.

The project aligns with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, as the C-295s are being manufactured in India in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus. These upgrades are expected to involve domestic firms, fostering innovation and indigenization in defense technology. Once operational, the weaponized C-295 will significantly enhance India’s maritime surveillance capabilities, providing a critical edge in maintaining regional stability and security.
